Deborah Szekely's most recent fundraising campaign has focused on the new Mission Hills Library, San Diego, for which she has been head of fundraising and a major donor.
The Emily Brightwood Reading Room there is named in honour of her late granddaughter.
Deborah Szekely was the first woman to be so honoured. The San Diego Union-Tribune, in reprinting her speech, acknowledged the honour, titling her a 'San Diego Icon'.
